Broken Consort: Pipes and Tabor

This is a performer playing the tabor drum and the Pipes (a bit like a tin whistle)

The tabor plays a repeated pattern, Ostinato, and the pipes play the melody.

Because there are both percussion and woodwind instruments here we describe this as a broken consort.

Renaissance Mass: Sanctus

The notes are tied together in this piece of music with respect for the fact that Renaissance Masses weren’t in strict time. The time was much free-er.

There are changes in melodic direction here.

You can identify a Mass by listening out for words such as, Sanctus, Gloria, Kyrie Eleison in the lyrics. In the renaissance, they were performed as parts of the Mass. They were unaccompanied at this time or, A capella.

Renaissance Motet- Ave Verum: William Byrd

This hauntingly beautiful motet, with Latin text would be sung at the processional or offertory procession at a Mass. It is referred to as a Sacred work because it is religious. Full of imitation, hemiolas, minor mode, and sung beautifully a cappella by an SATB choir.
